Engineer + teacher + gamer

I have a cousin entering university who is contemplating her choice of studies. That led me to thinking about my recommendations of industries that have the future potential.

Here’s my list for fields with huge potential in the decade after 2020.

Artificial intelligence remains the most power force in innovation. We’ve seen this in self-driving cars, in targeted social media ads, and in how Gmail inbox filters and email writing suggestions.

Genomics engineering using AI has huge potential, as we’ve already seen with the alpha folding research from Google’s DeepMind, which will lead to orders of magnitude cost savings in…

People value experiences more than material purchases. Case in point is my vacation in Japan from two years ago. Here are the highlights from my first voyage to the empire of the sun:

Cutting a Man in Half

You’ve never truly lived until the day you learn how to slash a man in half with a katana.

The legacy of the samurai flowed through my veins during a 2-hour lesson, in which I fathomed the kesagiri technique of the iaido martial art to quickly dismantle my enemies (who are dummies made from tatami, straw mats).

When I was younger, the presidential campaign of Ron Paul was an inspiration to millions of young people who saw the moral deterioration of the United States. The Constitutional values that made our country great was forgotten in the continual expansion of the federal government in warmongering and the Federal Reserve in controlling economic policy.

The financial crisis of 2008 was fixed by bailing out the banks and corporations, and destroying the worth of millions of poorer tax payers and indebted Americans. …

In the past month, I’ve been learning about the U.S. economic system. To an ever-growing number of people educated in tech and finance, the U.S. government’s actions during the March 2020 COVID-19 pandemic revealed that our economy is built upon a house of cards to which more cards are added by the Federal Reserve with each stimulus package.

Here’s the gist of the situation:

  1. With an artificial increase of the money supply, the value of the U.S. dollar continuously depreciates. In the context of a world where other countries are also printing money, this wouldn’t be a problem. However…
  2. The…

While not a revelation to people who meditate, I’ve realized that mindfulness is akin to a superhero power.

Mindfulness is as close as we can get to becoming a normal superhero

Mindfulness makes us able to detach and analyze situations without emotion. Recognizing our emotions ultimately leads to a better quality of life.

In an argument between people, the person who is mindful has a huge advantage over the person who cannot control their emotions. Consider a situation where someone cuts you off in line: your immediate reaction may be annoyance or anger. But reacting this way isn’t very effective in solving the problem. …

The 10k Hour Rule was popularized in the book Outliers. It is a summary of Anders Ericsson’s concept of deliberate practice that is required for a person to reach peak performance.

Sadly, we tend to live in the moment and disregard what happens in the future. Forget planning for years in the future, I can’t even plan the next week! But we cannot deny that a lifetime is limited. The earlier we realize that we have finite time, the earlier we can use that time more wisely.

How much time does a person have in life? …

Before the era of social media and internet memes, books were popular. One of these books was titled All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. Like many of you, I never read this book. But it inspired the title of this piece.

Since its inception, World of Warcraft (WoW) was one of the greatest interactive mediums to millions around the world.

Many people describe WoW like remembering the fond memories of a vacation. Many also describe it as a toxic grind full of juvenile a**holes.

I describe it differently.

To me, playing WoW affected real life in…

I have a wonderful life working in a cubicle in front of a computer screen. I get off work and spend the rest of the day on a tablet of a brand dependent on my consumer loyalty. I wake up the next day with bloodshot eyes and people wonder if I’ve done something illegal.

You’re reading this article on a screen and you probably notice that we spend more and more time on our devices. The amount of time we spend in front of a screen is only eclipsed by the amount of time spent by someone 10 years younger!

What is your response when asked to give examples of an art? Most subjects that pop up in most people’s minds probably include literature, music, sculpturing, and architecture. Some might even mention film as an art form. These traditional examples of art have been developing for decades and centuries. But there is one topic that most people will not mention, one that is relatively young in its existence: videogames.

God of War (2018)

When conventionally studied, we would never expect electronic games as a form of art. Yet upon further inspection, we cannot deny that modern electronic games contain many elements of what we…

Today is Valentine’s Day and I have love on my mind.

Love for loved ones. Love for friends. Love for pizza with peppers and onions.

Love, most of all, for this great country called the United States of America.

Today I become a citizen of the United States.

On my way to the citizen ceremony, I enjoy a few tamales from a local Tex-Mex joint. I take off on my trusty Toyota sedan, a brand I first knew about because the stadium of the Houston Rockets is the Toyota Center. I play songs from Michael Jackson and Eminem on a…
